This is mainly my impressions. We've had some success with these, but I've not done extensive research to be sure it's not somehow influenced by our behaviors. This seems to effect mutation a bit more than it effects genetics.
YMMV.

Meeroo Regard Sweet Spots:
Males: 100% Comfort, 400 to 600 Regard
Females: 100% Comfort, 400 to 600 Regard
The partner whose trait one wants to 'push' should have more Meeroo Regard than the other partner. Remember, you won't see any effect if the male has the trait until you breed is daughters to create grandchildren.
Once the pair is at the sweet spot, stop petting. They will gain 250 points each, with each nest. You're trying to let them move as slowly as possible through the range to get as many nests as possible before mutation gets too large and you're likely to see "change" to "boring old" instead of something "new" for the family tree.
Generations matter. The more family tree there is the more likely a mutation will be into the tree instead of reaching past Levio and Dawnara to something "new". That said, the "mutation into the tree" can still be good .. it could be a hidden trait you've had all along, or which arrived as a hidden mutation in an earlier generation, but which you were never lucky enough to expose. Or it may not be a mutation at all and you finally got lucky and exposed a hidden trait which has been there all along.

Player Regard:
We've gotten best success pushing the Player's Regard quickly up to Level 10 (usually by passing Meeroos to the Player for Release), then letting the player move slowly up to level 15 (usually by picking up treasures).

Fellowship Regard:
No effect on breeding.
