Attempting to understand the eyes

Jesslyn Dagger's picture

I have a basic understanding, I believe, of how eye color passes from parent to child. But I had a ponderance about the likelihood of clear eyes appearing in the following manner.

I'll use my youngest meeroo pair as my example.

Female: Kibbles
ID: 888810
Eyes: Cobalt/Diurnal/Dusty

Male: Bits
ID: 865416
Eyes: Glacier/Diurnal/Dusty

They have had two nests together.

Nest A
ID: 975547
Eyes: Cobalt/Diurnal/Dusty

Nest B
ID: 1061722
Eyes: Indigo/Diurnal/Clear

So! Using my understanding of how the eyes pass along, I see that the mother has cobalt as her dominant eye trait, with indigo as her recessive. Simple enough. But then there's the "clear" bit. The father has glacier eyes.

This is where my brain starts to confuse itself. Did this clear-eyed indigo baby appear so readily because the father also has an indigo recessive trait? Or, did I just happen to get a clear eye due to the random-chance factor?

I'm sure a larger sample size would help me understand better, but I was hoping for tidbits of insight and opinions in the meantime. I've also had monsoon clear eyes appearing from pairs I did not expect. Just trying to understand the big picture a bit better.

(I also think it's amusing that a red and an ursine are creating autumns, but that's an entirely different puzzle I probably can't wrap my sleep deprived brain around right now if ever.)
