Hidden Recessive vs. Mutation Question

Houmas's picture

What's the difference? I have heard this come up many times and need it explained incase I understand it wrong. Reason I ask is I attend a lot of auctions and lately people have been adding comments about what the nest or live roo's sibling was.

For example, say ya had a pair of sierra's and first nest was a cinder, and second nest was a red. Person goes to sell the second nest that was a red and announces its sibling was a cinder.

The way I understood is when this happens it could have been the cinder either was always in those sierra's gene pool and the owner was able tp dig deep into the recessive ancestry or a mutation happened that had nothing to do with the parents gene pool.

If it was a mutation shouldn't that mean cinder isn't technically in the parents gene pool?

I have refrained from saying what siblings were cause I was under the impression that unless it happens more then once from same parents I may have had a mutation.

I would appreciate someone helping me with this.
